
Prof. Dr József Bódis is a leading figure in both Hungarian and international medicine and higher education. He is the founder of the Doctoral School of Health Sciences at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Pécs.
He was Born in Csurgó in 1953, he completed his medical studies at the Medical University of Pécs, where he obtained his degree in general medicine in 1977. He began his professional career as a specialist in obstetrics and gynaecology. Over the years, he held positions as assistant lecturer, senior lecturer, associate professor, and eventually became Head of Department at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Baranya County Hospital. As his scientific career progressed, he was appointed university privatdozent in 1997, became a Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in 1998, and was awarded a full professorship in 2001.
In 2005, he established the Doctoral School at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Pécs. As its founding head, he played a pivotal role in advancing health science research and doctoral education in Hungary.
From 2006 to 2010, he served as Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Pécs. Subsequently, between 2010 and 2018, he was Rector of the University. Under his leadership, the institution experienced substantial development and the implementation of numerous innovative initiatives.
His scientific output comprises 598 publications, which have collectively received 3,022 citations, of which 2,447 are independent. He also holds 37 national and international patents, as well as 2 registered trademarks. He plays a key role in the "Human Reproduction" research group, which is supported by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (now HUN-REN).
Between 2018 and 2022, he held the position of Secretary of State for Education, Higher Education, Innovation and Vocational Training. Since 2021, he has served as Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Universitas Quinqueecclesiensis Foundation, which maintains the University of Pécs. From 2024 onwards, he continues his service as the Foundation’s Chief Advisor to the President.
His professional and academic achievements have been recognised by numerous prestigious awards, including the Officer’s Cross and the Middle Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary. As both a researcher and institutional leader, he has played an outstanding role in the advancement of health sciences. As the founder of the Doctoral School of the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Pécs, he continues to make a significant contribution to fostering scientific talent and enhancing the quality of doctoral education — his work serving as a guiding force for future generations.
